ThaiReefer advises customers to shut down the refrigeration machinery and open air vent for 15 minutes before opening container doors to unload cargo to prevent costly Reefer Container Vacuum Damage

In tropical regions, especially in South East Asia with a high temperature and humidity, these combinations can cause the reefer container box to collapse, commonly known as vacuum damage. Moisture in the air frosts during the refrigeration process, reducing the pressure of the vapour in the air, with the result that the vacuum will increase. In another scenario where the door is open and closed when the reefer container is partly loaded/empty, the vacuum forms rapidly (peak reached after only 5 minutes) because of the sudden drop in internal temperature

Cargo Handling – Pre-cooling of Reefer Cargo https://thaireefer.digitalakd.com/2023/11/27/cargo-handling-pre-cooling-of-reefer-cargo/ https://thaireefer.digitalakd.com/2023/11/27/cargo-handling-pre-cooling-of-reefer-cargo/#respond Mon, 27 Nov 2023 04:06:43 +0000 https://thaireefer.digitalakd.com/?p=17303

Cargo Handling – Pre-cooling of Reefer Cargo

Cargo Handling

Pre-cooling of Reefer Cargo:

  • Products should always be pre-cooled to the required temperature before being loaded into the container. Doing this avoid product temperature fluctuation and maintain the quality and freshness of perishable products and avoid spoilage.
  • Reefer containers are designed to maintain the temperature of the products they contain. It is a miss to lower it.
  • Cargo loaded at temperatures above reefer container set temperature can cause considerable strain on the reefer unit and may eventually result in a breakdown.

Preparation Process:

  • Cargo must be properly pre-cooled to its desired temperature prior to loading.
  • Ensure reefer container has been set with the correct temperature setting. Take careful note on +/- and C/F.
  • Air vents are to be opened to the required setting. The correct setting depends on the cargo.
  • Switch off the reefer machinery 15 mins before door opening and during cargo stuffing to avoid condensation and vacuum damage.
  • If inland transit time is greater than 1 hours for chilled cargo and 2 hours for frozen cargo, it is recommended to use the generator set to supply power to container during inland tracking.

Notes:

  • Operating reefer machinery when the doors are open causes hot ambient air to rapidly move into the container and heat up the cargo instead. When humid air enters the reefer, moisture condenses on interior surfaces and product, which may cause cargo damage.

Cargo Handling – Stuffing of Refrigerated Cargo https://thaireefer.digitalakd.com/2023/11/27/cargo-handling-stuffing-of-refrigerated-cargo/ https://thaireefer.digitalakd.com/2023/11/27/cargo-handling-stuffing-of-refrigerated-cargo/#respond Mon, 27 Nov 2023 03:58:52 +0000 https://thaireefer.digitalakd.com/?p=17295

Cargo Handling – Stuffing of Refrigerated Cargo

Recommendations for Stuffing of Refrigerated Cargo:

  • Load/unload the container with the shortest amount of time possible so that the ambient temperature does not affect the container and the cargo.
  • Ensure packages are stowed with adequate spacing in between for good and uninterrupted airflow.
  • Cargo should be packed minimum 100mm from the rear door to prevent short cycle of airflow preventing air returning to the reefer machinery.
  • Cargo should never be stored above the red load line within the reefer container; otherwise it will impede the airflow.
  • Do not leave large spaces where cargo could collapse during transit
  • The total cargo weight should not exceed the maximum payload within the container.
  • The total gross weight (including container tare weight) should not exceed the road limitation in any transit points during the transportation journey.
  • It is strongly recommended not to mix load different types of commodity under same load. Some of these cargos (mainly chilled fruits) have its own required temperature and carrying condition (air exchange). E.g. Produce with high ethylene content can cause rapid deterioration to highly sensitive cargo like grapes, plums, nectarine, etc.

We have seen shipping containers being repurposed for uses ranging from housing and even hotels—so it’s only logical that some forward-minded brands would choose to showcase their collections in these upcycled boxes. The following retail brands have all chosen the versatile, mobile, and humble shipping container as a temporary or permanent retail store to showcase their products. Here, we take a look at a few inspiring retail spaces.

When the beloved Japanese brand Uniqlo launched in the United States back in 2006, they deployed two 20-foot containers to tour New York City as retail shops—introducing the brand to the nation. The branded pop-up stores were mobile and fully equipped with shelving space, fitting rooms, and a cash register.

PUMA retrofitted 24 shipping containers to create PUMA City, a transportable retail and event building. With 1,020 square meters (11,000 square feet) of space, the three-level stack of containers was then assembled and disassembled at several different locations, creating a truly mobile retail experience. By offsetting the individual containers, they were able to create internal outdoor spaces, cantilevered overhangs, and terraces. The structure also featured two full retail spaces on the lower levels, both designed with large, double-height ceilings and a 4-container-wide open spaces. Offices, a press area, and storage were located on the second level, with a bar, event space, and a large open terrace at the top.

And some other container retail store design examples below.
